Literacy and ESL

Some clients experiencing severe mental health problems are unable to cope with the demands of a regular ESL class. This program provides them the opportunity to learn English as well as improve their reading and writing in a safe and comfortable environment. The class is taught by a very experienced teacher who is also a Consumer/Survivor.

ESL Group

The class activities include- reading magazines and newspapers, writing short stories and poems, oral readings of materials written, discussions of current events, and songs. Movies are an added attraction. Guest speakers are invited to speak to the class and have included a family physician, a financial advisor, and a health promoter. Some of the highlights are the decoration of the bulletin board on Psychiatric Survivors’ Day, the recent ESL Talent Show and the creation of the ESL Bulletin Board. The clients manage these activities by themselves. ESL Group 1 teaching helps the clients focus on world events, life skills, good mental health and culture. Discussions on news items in MetroToday make them aware of events in the world. Consequently, they are able to enlarge their horizons. The sharing of ideas in class activities and discussions on topics such as coping skills in face of adversities teaches them about some life skills techniques. Good mental health is reinforced by putting an emphasis on topics found in magazines such as diet, exercise, spirituality, and positive thinking.

“By having my clients write stories about their homeland and their childhood makes them feel accepted and be proud of their own cultures”. Caroline Fei-Yeng Kwok, ESL Teacher
